We published our first News Alert regarding cotton prices back on 1-12-2010. We followed up with a report in our 6-30-2010 Newsletter “The Twilight Zone” and reported again on 10-28-2010.

Cotton prices continue to defy all of the experts. Let’s look at the history. For most of the past decade cotton stayed between $.38 to $.80 per pound. In March of 2009 it dropped to $.51 and then began a steady climb. When we reported it back on 1-12-2010 it had jumped to $.77. By our June report it hit $.92 and by our October report it reached $1.27.

It’s now February 2011 and today’s price is $1.94 per pound and the futures are priced over $2.00. Our cotton shirt suppliers have absorbed much of the increase. They are now at the point that the increases are being passed on to the end users. While it’s difficult to predict, increaeses of 10%, 15% to 20% are conceivable.  Note these increases will impact your retail purchases this spring. 

Our initial solution a year ago was to look at blends or 100% polyester materials. That option is rapidly disappearing. It cost $42.00 to fill the tank of my little diesel Jetta this week. Oil prices are sky rocketing with the unrest in the Middle East.  The history here is frightening. Back when OPEC was formed in 1960 oil was $3.00 a barrel. As a result of the 1973 Yom Kippur War it rose to $5.20 and those of us old enough remember the gas lines and rationing in the following years. Then it rose to $15.00 until 1981 when the unrest in Iraq and Iran caused it to more than double to $31.00. By the mid 80’s it dropped as low as $10 until 2000. By 2005 it had reached $52 with a spike to $126 in early 2008. For 2010 it averaged $68 and today oil just hit $98. We will feel this at the pump and in everything that is made of plastic.

The bottom line is that these two commodities are going impact pricing and that if you are in the planning and budgeting stage we strongly recommend that everyone plan on factoring in price increases for apparel and almost anything that contains plastic.

One of the best tests to determine the effectiveness of a promotional product is to observe how it integrates into your daily life. A few years ago we received a sample of a trunk organizer – SUV organizer. I was skeptical as I unpacked it but it held my curiosity.

I began to test the organizer in the trunk of one car and in the back of the SUV. Low and behold, everything began to look organized. The test tuned into a love affair.
